Gerry was always supportive of anything that I wanted to do as a faculty member.  But more importantly, I felt supported as a person.  I'll never forget Gerry's kindness after my mother suddenly passed away, not just to me but also to my father.  He was a good man, with a wonderful sense of humor.  And since he lived close to me, I had the pleasure of many entertaining dinners with him.  I'll never forget his jokes, and the joy he demonstrated in telling them! Seigel ","note":"I graduated from Loyola Law in 1979.   Gerry reached out to me during his tenure as Dean and we had a natural friendship and as a result I supported Loyola with many of his causes that helped make Loyola Law more than a pure teaching school.    Many of his causes were especially important for people in need due to their disabilities and illnesses.   I was happy to convert the scholarship I established to his name.   Thanks to his help my son also attended Loyola Law and is now a successful attorney working for Merck.    Gerry was a wonderful man and I miss him. I was one of the students who sought the requirement and helped write it.  Dean McLaughlin supported our desire to ensure that every student make contact with and use his or her legal skills to help people of little or no means get access to the legal system.  He believed, as did we, that only through such experience could law students get a sense of the responsibility they bear as members of the bar.   Although we didn't get the 200 hours we wanted, he convinced enough faculty to adopt our proposal making Loyola the first law school on the West Coast to do so.  My only regret is that Gerry isn't here to know that students wanting to serve the public will be helped because of this scholarship in his honor.
